Announcing the Decision recognizing the national treasures to statue of the Goddess of Mercy with a thousand arms and eyes in Me So pagoda

On May 23, Van Giang District People's Committee cooperated with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to hold a ceremony to announce the decision to recognize the national treasures to of the Goddess of Mercy with a thousand arms and eyes in Me So pagoda (Van Giang district).  The announcement ceremony saw Mr. Dang Ngoc Quynh, Member of the Provincial Standing Committee, Standing Deputy Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee.

On December 24, 2018, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1821/QD-TTg on the recognition of national treasures (7th time).  1 of 22 recognized national treasures is statue of the Goddess of Mercy with a thousand arms and eyes which currently preserved in Me So pagoda (Van Giang district).  The statue of the Goddess of Mercy with a thousand arms and eyes in Me So pagoda was created in the early nineteenth century with the material of wooden jackfruit with paint coated in the form of sitting on a lotus in meditation posture.  The statue has a height of 280cm including stand.  The statue wears heaven-hat (Tienguan- 天冠). It has long ears with serene and upright face. The statue has 1014 hands and eyes, in which there are 42 big hands arranged antithetically.  The statue has an extra pair of hands on the back that make it is impressive and unique in multidimensional perspective as well as creating stability for the statue ...

 

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Dang Ngoc Quynh, Permanent Deputy Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested that in the next time, Van Giang district should actively coordinate with the units and authorities to create plans to protect national treasure - statue of the Goddess of Mercy with a thousand arms and eyes in Me So pagoda. He also asked relevant levels and branches strictly implement the Law on Cultural Heritage to protect and promote the value of monuments and antiques kept at monuments; strengthening propaganda and raising people's awareness about ensuring safety for relics and antiques in the province. The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism shall coordinates with districts, city and town to review and make statistics to objects with typical, unique and special values in terms of history, culture and arts to make the copy version and bring to the Provincial Museum for public introduction.

 

At the announcement ceremony, Mr. Dang Ngoc Quynh, Standing Deputy Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, handed over the Prime Minister's Decision to recognize the statue of the Goddess of Mercy with a thousand arms and eyes in Me So pagoda as a national treasure.
